The cardinal, small but mighty, does not believe in blending in. How can it? With its vivid coloring, it cannot help but stand out, unapologetically, in every season—even in the coldest winters, when everything else seems desolate.
What makes the cardinal so special? It shows up, even in storms. It reminds us that we are not meant to hide our fire - we should show off our uniqueness, our ability to think original thoughts, and to learn new ways of thinking and of being. Each of us has a voice, a purpose, and a presence that matters. And our voice purpose and presence becomes even more significant when we learn to read and write, which is the basis of critical thinking.
Literacy builds our understanding of the world. It helps us to be informed enough to speak up with grace and responsibility, to spot truth in a world full of lies, to create with unique insight, and to transform our communities. Our greatness begins with being able to unpack the printed word.
Just like the cardinal is radiant and inspiring, literacy gives us confidence so that we don’t shrink back. It makes us compassionately powerful enough to shine, to show up, to show out our intellect and our new ideas for the benefit of all of humanity.
We may feel overlooked. We may feel small. But the cardinal too is small—and yet it never doubts its right to soar.
