POSITION: SECONDARY SCIENCE TEACHER

Superintendent – General Supervisor

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Current New Mexico Teaching License
2. Must be Highly Qualified in Science
3. Demonstrates cooperativeness and a willingness to carry-out assigned tasks and performance responsibility.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Comply with the state approved Code of Ethics of the Education Profession and uphold and enforce department/unit rules, administrative directives and regulations, Board Policy, and State and Federal regulations.
2. Teach skills, knowledge and scientific attitudes through courses in life science, general science, earth science, environmental science biology, chemistry, or science problems to high school students, utilizing the state standards and benchmarks, and Common Core Standards through the curriculum.
3. Instruct students in citizenship, expected student behavior, and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the Las Vegas City School District.
4. Plan a science program involving demonstrations, lectures, and discussions and student experiences; organize laboratory activities for optimal learning.
5. Demonstrate scientific concepts by use of scientific apparatus, experiments, and standard or teacher-prepared charts, sketches, and other instructional aids.
6. Provide individual or small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of students and to accommodate circumstances where a variety of projects and experiments are being worked on simultaneously.
7. Instruct students in proper use, care and safe handling of chemicals, science equipment, and plant and animal life.
8. Provide for safe storage and proper use of materials, equipment and tools. Make minor adjustments and request repairs to equipment as required.
9. Establish and maintain standards of student behavior for a productive learning environment during class sessions, laboratory sessions, and field trips.
10. Evaluate each student's growth in knowledge, skills, equipment, chemicals and supplies, and maintain inventory records as required.
11. Select and request books, instructional aids, science, equipment, chemicals and supplies, and maintain inventory records as required.
12. Maintain professional competencies through in-service education activities provided by the district and self-selected or assigned professional growth activities.
13. Identify student needs, and cooperate with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude and learning problems.
14. Participate in curriculum alignment, benchmarks, performance standards/assessments, revisions and implement EPSS.
15. Gather data in order to develop strategies for student improvement.
16. Assist students in selection and development of individual research projects.
17. Cooperate with school administration in providing science displays, and programs for the school and community and in sponsoring science activities.
18. Communicate with parents on student’s progress and behavior.
19. Supervise students in and out of classroom activities as assigned.
20. Participate in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities to include; in and out of school activities as outlined in board policy.
21. Implement the teaching competencies adopted by the New Mexico Public Education Department and the Board of Education.
22. Administer group standardized tests in accordance with district testing program.
23. Attend board meetings at the request of the Superintendent.
24. Provide directions and materials for substitute teachers.
25. Safeguard the confidentiality of privileged information.
26. Must be technology literate.
27. Understand and participate in the development, use, and implementation of individualized education plans (IEPs) and individualized transition plans/504 plans, including making necessary modifications.
28. Perform other tasks as deemed appropriate and necessary by the supervisors(s).
