POSITION: Substitute Teacher
REPORTS TO: Building Principal – Immediate Supervisor
Superintendent – General Supervisor
PURPOSE:
The job of substitute is for the purposes of providing support to district employees whose job requires that a substitute be present during times of absence of teacher or an Educational Assistant during the school day. Substitutes are at will and assignments are not guaranteed.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. High School diploma or GED (salary is based on education).
2. Required - valid current NMPED Substitute Teacher or Teacher License
3. Prior experience working with children preferred but not required.
REQUIREMENTS:
Unless otherwise stated, any person seeking to perform services as a substitute teacher must hold a certificate authorizing that person to perform the duties of a substitute teacher. Substitute teacher certificates shall be issued by the PED to persons who at a minimum meet the requirements of this section. Such certificates authorize the substitute teacher to work as a substitute teacher in any public school district or charter school in New Mexico. At the very minimum, all applicants for initial substitute teacher licensure shall have attained eighteen (18) years of age for those seeking to perform instructional services in grades K-8, and twenty-one (21) years of age for those seeking to perform instructional services in grades 9-12, and have earned a high school diploma or high school diploma equivalency.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Report to work at scheduled time.
2. Long Term Substitute teacher is required to complete lesson plans/grades and all other duties assigned to the teacher they are substituting for.
3. Accept substitute assignments as offered through the district’s software or phone call.
4. Follow lesson plans and instructions of classroom teacher.
5. Monitor students to assure students are following education process.
6. Provide a secure, safe environment for students.
7. Substitute must refer anyone to the office that is requesting to pick up a student from school.
8. Maintain effective classroom management.
9. Implement successful strategies for teaching effective lessons.
10. Use fill-in activities appropriately and in a timely manner.
11. Provide summary of classroom activities for classroom teacher/associate and/or secretary.
12. Comply with Las Vegas City Schools Code of Conduct and Code of Ethics policies and all other policies and procedures.
13. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
14. Maintain confidentiality with sensitive matters.
15. Be flexible and able to prioritize tasks and maintain accurate and detailed records.
16. Work independently with very little supervision.
17. May be required to perform other functions/duties as assigned by school site supervisor.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
None
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Sitting, standing, lifting and carrying (up to 50 pounds), climbing stairs, reaching, squatting, kneeling, having full mobility of fingers/hands, and moving light furniture may be required, unless ADA accommodations have been mutually agreed on and does not create an undue hardship upon the district.
SAFETY AND HEALTH:
Knowledge of universal hygiene precautions (blood borne pathogens, body fluids, etc.)
EQUIPMENT/MATERIAL HANDLED:
Must know how to properly operate, or be willing to learn to operate, multi-media equipment including current technology as needed.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Must be able to work within various degrees of noise and temperature. Interruptions of work are routine. Flexibility and patience are required. Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignments without direct supervision. May work under stressful conditions on occasion.
SALARY: As per district Substitute Pay Schedule:
• High School Diploma/AA Degree/GED - $112.00/day
• Bachelors/Masters/PHD Degree - $119.00/day
• LVCS Retired Teacher - $128.00/day
